Giovanna is the most recent member of AmazoniAlerta’s legal team. She joins with the support of The British Academy as an ODA Global Fellow partnered with AmazoniAlerta. At AmazoniAlerta Giovanna is leading a groundbreaking project to collate and publish a handbook on Indigenous Right Law in Brazil.
Giovanna is currently a senior lecturer at the Lincoln Law School, University of Lincoln. Before joining the University of Lincoln, Giovanna carried out a variety of activities in Brazil, UK and abroad. She taught at University Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and worked at the Brazilian Office of Public Defenders in Brasília. She was a visiting professional at the International Criminal Court and volunteered to work as a legal assistant at the Tribunal Internacional de Justicia Restaurativa en El Salvador.
Giovanna is interested in exploring the inclusivity of law: which voices are silenced by law and legal research; what we can learn from such voices and the challenges we face to do so. Expanding on this, in the field of (international) criminal and penal law, she is interested in the voices of victims and prisoners. In the field of international law, her attention is directed towards the voices of developing countries and indigenous peoples. In (international) environmental law, the voices of developing countries, indigenous peoples are the focus of her attention together with the debates concerning the legal representation of animals.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Brasilia, Brazil, a Master degree from the University of Uppsala, Sweden and a PhD degree from the University of Nottingham. United Kingdom.
